Mineral Licks / Location
Mineral licks--do you need them? How I use them I'm Nelson Chandler who grew up hunting in northwest Georgia. I've hunted some ag country but mostly mountain terrain. I've been asked if mineral licks are necessary for deer and are they worth the work and time. My answer is a definite yes to mineral licks. Choosing the right ingredients and the correct location can and does make all the difference. Treedup Outdoors has a lick that is all you need to start and maintain mineral sites. Mine are usually placed in easily accessed locations, near an ag field where deer signs are visible from well used established trails. First I rake out approx a 5x5 place on the ground and pour Illusion mineral on the bare ground dirt and work in lightly with a rake. As an added bonus, I will put a 2-3 foot piece of firewood (anything but hickory) placing it upright to act as an actual stump. Next I pour one half of a bottle of Deershine on the wood letting it soak. Next place your trail camera about 6-8 feet above and well hidden. The also benefits the entire herd and a great inventory tool for bucks and does in the area. Finally it's very enjoyable to watch the lick become a magnet for deer. So do we need them???? Resounding Yes we do.
